Meeting life's challenges in a healthy way

What is emotional resilience?

Emotional resilience is our ability to cope with life’s ups and downs – learning how to navigate changes, being able to grow and learn through different experiences. The good news is that emotional resilience is a skill we can learn and develop throughout our lifetime. And when we work on our resilience, we can meet life’s challenges in ways that support our health and wellbeing.

Here are some of the benefits of building resilience:

  • Supports your immune system
  • Prevents illness
  • Supports recovery if you do become ill
  • Reduces anxiety
  • Reduces depression
  • Enables you to better self regulate your emotions
  • Allows you to feel more centred when pushed and pulled by life’s challenges

An emotionally resilient person is better able to cope with the stresses and strains of everyday life. These practices help us to self regulate, bringing ourselves back to our ‘centre’ and a place of balance.

Resilient workplace

We all know how stressful and overwhelming work life can be, no matter what kind of industry or workplace you’re in. The more we can build our emotional resilience personally, the more we can feel resilient in our professional life too. This includes learning to accept criticism, not taking things so personally, dealing with knock-backs or rejections more easily, managing impostor syndrome and taming our inner critic.

Resilient communities

Imagine if a whole community was made up of resilient people! There would be far less conflict and disagreement, reduced illness, more open and honest discussions, and probably more constructive action too. If each one of us can find the vulnerability and empowerment we need to be happy within ourselves, we can build the resilient communities we so badly need.

Consider embracing this pioneering work...
During the last few months I have learned about techniques that are aimed at developing emotional and physical resilience. I have used these new found skills during extremely challenging times and found strength and empowerment. Instead of depending on television to numb the senses I have taken to reading instead. My life seems to have slowed down, providing me with the space and time to heal myself, thereby improving my quality of life and eventually achieving my goal of good health. I am indebted to Dr Simmons and his colleagues and would urge other practitioners to consider embracing this pioneering work. – Rohan

A simple philosophical approach to a complicated world...
I feel more complete and in less conflict with myself and my surroundings. I am consciously eating better and learning to be kinder to myself and in turn to those around me. I had many of the tools already in my life but this has given me the holistic platform to work them together as one. Using the Four Principles as my baseline rhythm themes gives a simple philosophical approach to a complicated world.
